Server FAIL

So you may have noticed some issues with the site.  The shitty host I use had a server failure and I’m having some issues with the DB restore.  Hopefully I can get it all sorted out soon.  Thanks for reading.

UT Football

Saturday afternoon we went to Memorial Stadium to take in a UT football game.  The football culture is so intense here we felt like we had to experience it at least once.  We met up with our friends beforehand to do some pre-game grilling and watch IU vs Michigan on TV.  The walk to the stadium was interesting as most people were walking around drinking openly while the cops turned a blind eye.  I guess they can’t arrest everyone in town.

The seats were pretty great.  We were in the student section down by the endzone right by the cannon.  The actual cannon that booms every kickoff and UT score.   The previous week’s fall weather had disappeared and it was 95 but felt like 115 in the open sunlight surrounded by sweaty drunk bodies.  Within minutes I had soaked through my shirt.  Not fun.  “Give ‘em hell; give ‘em hell; make ‘em eat shit,” is apparently the UT chant and is used often.  Like every 3 minutes.  The game was a joke as UT  continued trying to run up the score against an already humiliated UTEP.  We left at halftime.  It did nothing to change my opinion of the fans or the team.  Obnoxious classless assholes.  I’m glad we went but I have no desire to ever do it again.

Jemaine Clement

Last Friday we went to Book People after work to see an in-store appearance by Jemaine of Flight of the Conchords.  He was in character as Dr Ronald Chevalier from his new movie Gentlemen Broncos.  We had to wait for almost an hour as things were running behind but it ended up being worth it.  Jemaine read an excerpt from the novel featured in the movie and then they brought out the director and the rest of the cast, including Sam Rockwell.  This was completely unexpected and awesome.  Lauren and I love Rockwell so were were freaking out a bit.  The Q&A was very strange though.  Nobody knew these people were going to be there so nobody had questions prepared.  There was a lot of awkward silence.  The whole thing was a bit surreal.

F.N. Goode Burger

Yesterday, everything at Little Woodrows, beer, burgers, etc., was 50% off.  This is the only reason I would ever step foot in the bland Austin chain’s Guadalupe location.  The food is supplied by a burger trailer in the back, F. N. Goode’s, goofy name run by goofy, likeable guys with Clerks-style cartoons of their faces on the sign.  The one who took our order could easily get work as a Silent Bob stand-in.

The burgers were actually really good.  The bun was a bit too thick, and it could have used a bit more mayo, but those are minor complaints.  Lauren and I pretty much had the patio to ourselves.  There were a few people scattered indoors, but it was mostly a ghost town because of some light rain.  How bad does your business have to be to not even draw a crowd on half-off day?  I pity the good burger that’s stuck in a crummy bar like this.
