Home Slice
Friday night was stormy so Lauren and I ordered a pizza, bought some wine, and watched movies. We usually eat Salvation because it’s delicious but we wanted to try something else, so we called Home Slice. We ordered a white pie with spinach & ricotta. This pizza is the shit. It’s cooked in old school ovens and the crust is awesome. I want to try the sausage and roasted pepper next time. They are on South Congress but it’s worth the trip.

Screaming Goat
A little house on 11th St houses the Screaming Goat. After running some errands on Saturday, we stopped in for lunch. They have the standard menu of tacos, burritos but I had read about their flautas ahogadas (drowned) so we got an order of those and a taco al pastor. The weather was perfect so we grabbed a picnic table next to the creek out back. The flautas were huge and would have been more than enough to split as a meal. The tomatillo broth poured over them was delicious. The al pastor had good flavor but the meat was a bit tough. The chunks of pineapple were a nice touch.

Asti
Lauren’s Mom is in town and last night she treated us to a nice meal at Asti. The place is much smaller inside than expected. It was dimly lit but still inviting and cozy. Every single thing on the menu sounded great so it took us a while to decide. We ended up getting Seared Monkfish & Lemon Salsa Verde and Braised Beef Short Ribs Agrodolce. Monkfish is usually called “poor man’s lobster” and I can see why. It has a very meaty texture. The fish was topped with a piece of fried prosciutto, I usually welcome bacon in any form, but it overpowered all the other flavors of the dish. My short ribs were the highlight of the night. They were incredibley tender and served on a pile of root vegetable puree, the worked really well with the agrodolce sauce. We plan to go back to try their pasta/pizza dishes soon.
